KARAWANG, INDONESIA Nov. 15, 2018— The Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid has secured the highest overall score of any five-star rated vehicle at the 3rdASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards 2018. IONIQ Hybrid received two accolades in recognition of its safety performance, including an Appreciation Award for being ‘Best Overall’ and having the ‘Best Safety Assist Technology’.
The ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards were established to commemorate high achievers in car safety for the ASEAN region. Taking place every two years, only vehicles that have achieved a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating within that timeframe are eligible. In 2017, ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix test standards were reinforced with a more comprehensive rating system. There are four main Grand Prix award categories, including Vehicle Assessment, Excellent Research Award, Safety Technology Award, and Appreciation Award.
“We are greatly honored that IONIQ has been recognized for providing customers with the highest level of safety, something Hyundai is committed to delivering across our entire range of models,” said Yong Suk Lee, Head of Asia & Pacific Regional Headquarters. “We expect IONIQ to become Hyundai’s brand ambassador in the ASEAN market, where demand for future mobility solutions is consistently growing.”
The Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid is Hyundai’s fifth model tested by ASEAN NCAP. The IONIQ performed extremely well, achieving an impressive overall score of 91.98 from a collective of assessed domains, including Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, and Safety Assist. The outstanding result underlines Hyundai’s engineering credibility in terms of safety and reliability, and shows that the IONIQ is equipped with safety features to the highest standard, making it eligible for a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating.
Hyundai SmartSense: Latest Active Safety Technologies To comply with the highest ASEAN NCAP safety standards, the IONIQ features the latest Hyundai SmartSense active safety and driving assistance technologies. They help to significantly lower the risk of collisions and increase driver and passenger comfort. The Lane Keeping Assist System is enhanced by the standard-fit Lane Following Assist (LFA), which keeps the car in the middle of the lane and alerts the driver in case of any unsafe movements at a speed from 0 to 150 km/h.
Since 2017, ASEAN NCAP has introduced Blind Spot Technology in its new protocol. Fortunately, the IONIQ already has a standard-fit Blind SpotDetection system equipped. This informs the driver of vehicles in the blind spot, making it easier to change lanes, for example. When reversing out of a parking space, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert which accompanies the BSD system can mitigate the consequences of an impending collision.
Smart Cruise Control is a convenience feature which employs the front mounted radar sensor to monitor the vehicle ahead. It automatically maintains the pre-set speed and a safe distance between vehicles by regulating the throttle and applying brakes when needed.
An additional safety feature is the Autonomous Emergency Brake. This is an advanced driving assistance system that relies on radar signals and a forward detection camera to continuously analyse motion patterns. On detecting the risk of a collision with a pedestrian or another vehicle then the brakes are automatically applied thus minimizing the risk of vehicle damage and/or personal injury.
